Course Description: This course provides a study of the cultural and ideological characteristics of Japanese learning and teaching, as well as the basic structure of the national education system. It traces the development of issues plaguing Japanese educators, and examines reforms crafted since the 2000s to address these challenges. Topics covered include: Japanese educators' contribution to educational quality in other countries, problematic aspects of history education in Japan, and the role of Japanese shadow education from the comparative perspective. Assessment: class participation (40%), essays (20%), final report (20%), and final presentation (20%).
