Course Description: This course offers and introduction to the current issues concerning population growth and natural resources. It also takes a historical approach to population growth from the time of Malthus up through recent discussions. It addresses the important contribution of the theory of demographic transition (Chesnais, Lesthaeghe, Malmberg) as well as the contributions of historians (Leroy- Ladurie), anthropologists (Boserup, Goody), and environmentalists (Diamond). The focus is on the long term.
