Course Description: Prerequisite: basic knowledge of China and Chinese. This course provides a political economy perspective on the rapidly changing economy and society in contemporary China. The course focuses on the discussion how political, economic and social forces shape socialism with Chinese characteristics. Topics include lexicon of China’s political economy, demographic dividend and China’s power, territorial dimensions of authority and power in China’s political economy, transformation of economic development models, migration and citizenship in the Chinese context, political economy concerns of urbanization, inequality under welfare regime transformation, and political reform. Assessment: participation, group projects, individual research proposal, final.
