Course Description: This course provides a study of consumer behavior through psychological research, focusing on issues of communication (advertising and marketing), identity (you are what you buy), social status (among peers and potential mates), decision-making, and mental and physical health. The course blends elements from psychology, sociology, social anthropology, and economics. It examines the buyer decision making process, both individually and in groups; characteristics of individual consumers, such as demographics and behavioral variables in an attempt to understand people`s wants; and assesses influences on the consumer from groups such as family, friends, reference groups, and society in general.
