Course Description: The course introduces the evolution of social service professions in South Africa and the link between the global, regional, and national contexts. It focuses on the political economy of social services in South Africa from the pre- to post-democratic periods. The course provides an introduction to the main policies, legislation, and programs that shape the social service professions in South Africa. It also introduces global and regional trends that impact social service provisions. In addition it looks ast the specific roles of social workers and the social services in promoting human well-being. Assessment: coursework (50%), final exam (50%).
