Course Description: This is a discovery-based research course that offers training in biological research, including techniques in genetics, model organisms, bioinformatics, genomics and microscopy. In addition to conducting original research on drosophila genetics, lectures discuss fundamental concepts in genetics and developmental biology. Specific topics include classical genetics and scientific record keeping, recombination mapping, insertional mutagenesis, grant writing, differential gene expression, DNA sequencing, drosophila development, drosophila genome database, manuscript writing basics, cell communication and signal transduction, and research ethics. The course methodology involves one hour of lecture and three hours of scheduled lab time per week.
