Course Description: This course consists of presentations, discussions, and lectures about "the world's Englishes." The course requires research based on the lectures and presentations of research in class and also to partner universities in other countries through conference calls. This course is focused on English used in Asia. English is not a language that is just spoken by native speakers. As a result, it can be called a global language. If you can speak English, you can most likely communicate with people even if they have a different background than you. English is the most widely used communication tool in the world. English is used as an international language by business people and researchers all over the world. English, when used as a common language, is something that is developed when two people of different linguistic backgrounds want to communicate, and has nothing to do with native speakers of English. The course touches on historical, cultural, political, and economic aspects of English. The course also discusses the spread of English, and its political and economic effects on the world.
