Course Description: This course deals with developing an understanding of the speech sounds in English, Japanese and other languages. It begins by teaching and requiring memorization of the International Phonetic Alphabet. This course teaches how to instruct others in the pronunciation for the development of native-like accents in various languages; provides working knowledge of phonetics and phonology as it applies to language teaching; and examines the relationship between phonetics and spelling/literacy skills. Text: Gerald Kelly, HOW TO TEACH PRONUNCIATION. Assessment: class attendance, participation, and homework assignments (20%), in-class quizzes (40%), and project presentation (40%).
