Course Description: In the last decade, Japanese studies have shown an increasing interest in Japanese popular culture, opening a new space to question established discourses on Japanese modernity. This class focus is more specifically on the question of youth in Japanese urban modernity, and looks at a number of visual texts (film, animation, manga, literature), discusses the historical evolution of youth in Japanese popular culture from the 1920s to the present time of Fukushima Japan. This course has three objectives. First, to give a sense of the state of the field of Japanese youth culture with appropriate references. Second, provide the necessary tools for analyzing fictional narratives and visual texts. Last, provide guidance for the writing of an academic paper. Assessment: papers (40%), attendance, participation in discussions, short presentations (30%), project proposal and annotated bibliography (30%).
