Course Description: This advanced seminar studies the economies in East Asia including the Japanese economy. Specifically, the course studies the development of these economies, their competition and cooperation, the financial markets in this area. For this purpose, students read various papers and reports and are expected to perform some empirical tests. Students are expected to read the assigned papers prior to each class and actively participate in discussions. They have to have at least one presentation in the class. In addition, they have to complete one term paper. The topic of the term paper will be discussed with the instructor. Text: The Financial Crisis: Inquiry report, 2011, Final Crisis Inquiry commission, Public Affairs: New York. Assessment: papers (30%), class participation, presentation, and discussions (40%), assignments (30%).
