Course Description: This course examines the social and cultural construction of both masculinity and femininity as applied to a range of contexts. Expressions of gender occupy every corner of our society at the most mundane level—how we walk down the street, who drives the bus and in what manner, who cooks our dinner, and who cleans up afterwards. Similarly, gendered practices are embedded in other situations including weddings, media, relationships, schools, sporting events, and work. As we consider our gendered lives, we also bear in mind gender’s intersection with class, sexuality, ethnicity, age, geographical location and others. Topics covered include gender ideologies; body and performance, gender socialization, literature, media, global/intersectional issues, friendships and romantic relationships, and work. Assessment: attendance and participation, mini-think assignments, two papers, three short quizzes.
