Course Description: This course offers a study of the culture of the Weimar Republic in Berlin from 1918 to 1933. The course explores Berlin’s cultural development through the frame of political and social events including revolution, riots, inflation stabilization, economic crisis, presidential administration, and lastly, the assumption of power by the Nazis. Through films (SINFONIE DER GROßSTADT by Walter Ruttmann and KUHLE WAMPE by Bertolt Brecht and Slatan Dudow), the works of selected authors (Mann, Kisch, Benjamin, Brecht, and Döblin), and analysis of art movements, central concepts for the period, dominant motifs, and new forms of representation are addressed and discussed. Students actively contribute during discussion, read seminar materials, and participate in a trip to the theater.
