Course Description:
This course explores the assertion that newspapers and magazines are just as valid a form of literature in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries as books were previously. These short texts are the result of a natural evolution of literature, shaped by the Industrial Revolution, war-torn Europe in the twentieth century, and the increasingly progressive technology of present day. The course provides an overview of the history of the relationship between literature and newspapers and magazines, from their beginnings in the eighteenth century through the twentieth century, and examines methodological issues surrounding the proper treatment of printed literature within the history of developed media.
