Course Description:
This course offers a study of the German language outside of Germany. It is often assumed that the standard German language is spoken everywhere around the world, however this is not the case. This course addresses the pluricentricity of the German language which deviates substantially between northern Germany Standard varieties and the German language in Austria and Switzerland. The course also discusses varieties of the German language outside of Central Europe, including Namibia, Texas, Papua New Guinea, and Australia.
