Course Description: This course introduces economics and provides a balanced understanding of the characteristics of Japanese industries and enterprises. The course examines the development of Japanese businesses and management practices from a practical and historical perspective, as well as theoretical and evolutionary models; compares Japanese businesses and industries to their international counterparts; studies the unique empirical richness of Japanese economics in post war, bubble period, and other economic eras; looks at issues related to the process and characteristics of Japan's industrial development and stagnation as well as the issues related to the features of Japan's businesses and group economic speculation. Emphasis is placed on moderating theory with practical considerations, and understanding how Japanese businesses and management practices are different from those of other countries. Assessment: class attendance (15%), class participation (15%), midterm exam (20%), final exam (20%), and group project analyzing one Japanese company and its industry, and comparing its development and practices to those of its counterparts. Their findings are presented on the last two days of class. Students are graded both on the presentation and by the other students in their group on the work that they performed (30%).
