Course Description: This course focuses on Kyoto culture, pop culture, language including Kansai dialect, and Japanese companies in Kyoto. This course examines the traditional cultures in Japan, the culture of tea ceremony and manga, and the food culture in Kyoto. This course describes some important and special festivals in Japan, and discusses the history and special meanings behind; describes the recent popular culture after World War II, which introduces many aspects of the Japanese society; compares and contrasts the difference between Japanese and Chinese culture, between Japanese and American culture through discussion with local Japanese students; and introduces the culture of Japanese company in Kyoto by visiting a local factory in Kyoto. Assessment: class attendance (40%), homework assignments (30%), and 500 to 600-word final paper in Japanese.
