Course Description: This course provides understanding of how the unique aesthetic sense of Japanese is expressed through Japanese culture and the aesthetic values the Japanese tradition places on the delicate, the condensed, the serene and the evanescent. Topics are examined through participation in hands-on activities and field trips and include how the introduction of western cultures and religions has affected Japanese traditions and beauty; reflect on one's own country and culture through studying Japanese culture and beauty (for foreign students). The course explores and discovers the art and tradition of Kyoto. Assessment: class attendance and participation (30%), response papers (50%), and final paper (20%).
