Course Description: This course reviews and examines Japanese honorific language expressions (sonkeigo etc.), as well as Japanese business manner in everyday life. Students analyze writing examples, such as brief scholarly articles or newspaper clippings, with special attention to formal grammar and language. Emphasis is placed on developing the necessary vocabulary and grammar to interview and work in a Japanese business setting. Students compare and contrast usage situations for the varied forms of formal speech as well as their notable difference from standard language. Additional focus is placed on practical usage of formal language in tandem with proper business manner. Assessment: class attendance and participation (20%), homework assignments (20%), quizzes (30%), and final exam (30%).
