Course Description: This course examines the intersection of religion (Shintoism and Buddhism) and life in Japan. This course traces the history of Shintoism and Buddhism in Japan, and their byproducts such as shrines and temples. The course compares and contrasts customs within Japanese religion and life with those from other countries and reflects on the history and modern day practices of Shintoism and Buddhism in Japanese life. Additionally, the courses provides the the opportunity to try out Japanese cultural practices such as Aikido (martial arts), tea ceremony, etc. Assessment: class attendance, class participation, and worksheets based on lecture content (70%), and final exam (30%).
