Course Description: This elementary Japanese language skills course introduces Japanese honorific speech (keigo), which is indispensable in Japanese business culture and society. The course uses conversation practice and role-play activities to reinforce the language skills taught through this course. Topics: business manners and customs which are practiced by members of Japanese society; Japanese culture and society through learning about Japanese companies that exert domestic and international influence; various replacements and alterations that must be made in order to speak in an appropriate manner for the station of the person that they are speaking to;and how to use language to both understand and construct social position. As some of the course material may be difficult to communicate using elementary Japanese language, instruction is aided by media, including photographs, videos, and illustrations. When necessary and appropriate, English handouts describing and explaining the class topics are distributed. Assessment: class attendance and participation (20%), homework assignments (20%), quizzes (30%), and final exam (30%).
