Course Description: This course examines globalization and its effect of Japanese society, in both the domestic and international spheres. This course traces and analyzes the Japanese history from the Tokugawa to present day with a heavy focus on events of global contact and their effect on culture and society. Emphasis is placed on how historical events in globalization effect current Japan. While structured as a history course, emphasis is not on teaching history, but globalization. The course compares and contrast the effects of globalization on Japan and other countries (USA etc.). Texts: Christopher Goto-Jones, MODERN JAPAN: A VERY SHORT INTRODUCTION; and other reading distributed in class. Assessment: class participation (20%), midterm exam (30%), and final exam (50%).
