Course Description: This course offers a study of how to read the city of Berlin through theoretical approaches, and literary and film representations. Students engage with the cityscape itself by examining architectural features, the organization of public space, signs, plaques and images, and by exploring their own readings and descriptions of specific streets or neighborhoods of Berlin. The course focuses on how to read complex urban environments, and how to reflect upon their perceptions. Students perform a critical analysis of the “text” of the city and a critical assessment of different ways in which it is represented in media, popular culture, and tourism marketing.
