Course Description: This course is designed for native Japanese speakers. It is a continuation of Japanese VII at ICU. It develops competence in reading and writing of daily used kanji; reading skills in both logical and poetic sentences, including newspaper articles, journals, novels, and classic literature; and composition of research papers and formal reports of 3000 to 5000 words. In addition, by dealing with topics in traditional and contemporary Japanese culture, the class develops understanding of Japan. Texts: The Japanese Times, KANJI IN CONTEXT, v. 1 Bungei Shunju Ltd, NIHON NO RONTEN 2002; and newspaper articles. Assessment: Five areas, each of which is worth 20%: kanji, newspaper reading, presentation and debates, novel and film, and a project.
