Course Description: This is a beginning elementary Japanese course. The purpose of this course is to develop basic knowledge of spoken Japanese to effectively communicate in everyday situations; to recognize many signs used in daily life; and to read and write simple sentences. Although emphasis is placed on speaking and listening, attention is also given to reading and writing. Approximately 92 Japanese characters are taught in the the first week and approximately 100 kanji during the next five weeks. In addition, the course introduces general knowledge of the Japanese people and their culture. Text: JAPANESE FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS BASIC-1 by ICU. Assessment: class participation (10%), a journal (10%), a project (10%), tests and quizzes (30%), a midterm exam (20%), and a final exam (20%).
