Course Description: This course examines the evolution and archaeological evidence for the development of human culture in the late Pliocene and Pleistocene ages. It explores the evidence of human evolution from the origins of the hominids to the emergence of modern humans, along with congruent archaeological traces. The course answers questions such as Why in Africa?, Why a larger brain?, Why bipedalism?, Why make tools?, and situates the study of human origins in its evolutionary context. Assessment: assignments and class tests (50%) and one three-hour exam (50%).
