Course Description: This course covers the fundamental tools for research into media texts, industries, production, consumption, and use. Students gather and analyze of data; research organizations; analyze audiovisual and verbal texts; use archives and databases; apply techniques in audience research; and explore the ethical and theoretical principles underpinning research methods. The course draws on work across social science and humanities approaches to media analysis and encourages critical awareness of the comparative strengths, weaknesses, and appropriate selection of research methods. Students gain a deeper understanding of the diverse forces shaping the contemporary mediascape, and of the different theoretical traditions underpinning various research methodologies in the field of media and communication.
