Course Description: This course explores how components of gender, race, and music in the United States are intertwined, and how they have impacted the culture of the nation over decades. It analyzes the foundations of rock (jazz, blues, and gospel, among others) and accounts for the impact they have had on modern interpretations of rock culture, specifically, the appropropriation of African American men and women displayed in music, and how gender norms and stereotypes are stigmatized within the music industry.
