Course Description: This course covers the fundamental terminology, principles, and methods used in engineering fluid mechanics. Fluid mechanics includes both fluid statics (fluids at rest) and fluid dynamics (moving fluids). Fluid flow has a broad application area ranging from car/airplane aerodynamics, heat exchangers, power generation systems, micro-fluidics, and flows in artificial hearts. Students explore the following concepts: fluid properties; fluid statics and buoyancy; Bernoulli's equation and its use/limitations; flow measurement techniques; dimensional analysis; laminar and turbulent flow; flow in pipes and pipe networks, including pressure drop calculations; boundary layer in external flow; drag or immersed bodies; turbines, fans, and pumps; and non-dimensional analysis of turbo-machines.
