Course Description: This course describes the characteristics of and the special challenges facing developing nations; explains alternative theories of economic growth and evaluates their ability to explain the growth experiences of less-developed countries; and discusses the domestic problems that developing nations face, assesses the seriousness of these problems, and evaluates the effectiveness of various policies designed to deal with domestic issues. Lecture topics: introduction to developing countries and economic development; theories of economic development; poverty, inequality, and economic development; urbanization and rural-urban migration; investing in people; agricultural transformation and rural development; the environment and development; the roles of market, state, and civil society in development; and international conditions for development in developing countries. Text: Michael P. Todaro and Stephen P. Smith, ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT: and various supplementary readings. Assessment: participation, assignments, and discussions (40%), final exam (60%).
