Country - Partner Institution - Programs: Australia - University of Melbourne - 'Australian Universities'
UC Course SubjectBiochemistry
Number & Suffix: 106
Full UC Title: BIOCHEMISTRY AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGY
Transcript Title: BIOCHEM & MOLEC BIO
UC QTR Units - Division: 6.0 - Upper Division
Course Description: This course investigates the molecular basis of life systems by considering the chemistry of biological macromolecules and the metabolic pathways involved in basic life processes. This information is essential for the understanding of any biological system. Specific topics covered include the molecular architecture of cells; cell signaling; the structure of biological building blocks (nucleic acids, amino acids, carbohydrates, lipids) and their various roles in the life of a cell; the ability of nucleic acids to replicate information; genomics; synthesis of RNAs; the structure and function of proteins; properties of enzymes; the structure of lipids; and carbohydrates. As carbohydrates are an essential source of immediate energy, the complete breakdown of glucose and the fate of its metabolites is investigated as an example of cellular metabolism.
Language of Instruction: English
