Course Description: The first part of this course introduces the basic concepts and principles of materials science and engineering with emphasis on material microstructure. Topics include atomic bonding and crystal structure, imperfections in solids, diffusion and energy aspect of materials, mechanical properties, phase diagrams, phase transformation, heat treatment of metallic alloys, and metallic materials. The second part introduces microstructures; processing and properties of metals, ceramics and glasses, polymer, composites, and construction materials; materials selection; and case studies on materials processing.
