Course Description: The emergence of China as an economic power has important implications for energy use and environmental outcomes at the local, regional and global levels. China is now the world’s largest energy consumer and the world’s largest carbon producer. This course provides an overview and a systematic discussion of China’s major environmental and energy issues, examining the evolution and effectiveness of China’s environmental governance and environmental policies during a period of rapid economic growth and social and political transformation, and to explore choices that could promote a more sustainable and low carbon development path in China. China’s culture and historical characteristics and the transition to market economy make China a unique case to study and to contribute to social, politics, and environmental policy studies, which can be largely different from studies and theories based on western culture and economic systems. The study on China has global implications, and improves understanding of China’s global role in cooperative efforts to develop solutions to global environmental and energy challenges.
