Course Description: The course provides a study of general ship knowledge, navigation, chartwork exercises, and marine research vessels. General ship topics include ship cargoes, merchant fleet, classification societies, international load line, ship tonnage measurements, shift of ship's center of gravity. Earth navigation topics include mercator and gnomonic charts, datum, distances, the nautical mile, the knot, position lines and position fixes, dead reckoning, estimated position, and observed position. Chartwork exercises include compass rose, gyro, and magnetic compass courses. The course includes field visits to practice practical seamanship exercises including anchors and markings, ropes, tackles, knots, splices. Texts: G.L.
