Course Description:
This course interrogates the establishment of European colonial rule in Africa from 1870 to the outbreak of the World War 1 in 1914. In doing so, the course examines the historical processes that culminated in the partition of Africa and the African responses to the processes. Themes explored include the general motivations and timing of the partition of Africa, local factors behind the European exertions in select regions of Africa; the African response to the colonial conquest including the choice between resistance and cooperation, and case studies.
