Course Description: This course explores Ghanaian society, with particular emphasis on the major social institutions and the roles they play in traditional and contemporary society. The discussion begins with an examination of the concept of social structure, and the identification of the land and the people of Ghana and their spatial distribution. The major institutions discussed include marriage and the family, religious beliefs and practices, types of political organizations, economic activities and modes of socialization. The impact of social change on these institutions is also indicated. This course provides an opportunity for students to systematically examine and understand the pattern of behavior structured around the basic and mutual needs of individuals and groups in the traditional society.
