Course Description: This course examines Japan’s relations with East Asia and other world powers with particular emphasis on the role of culture and the importance of intercultural relations. Topics include the ancient history of East Asia, Japan’s complicated relationship with Korea, the impact of Western imperialism as a political and cultural force, Japan’s response to the West and general war in East Asia, and Japan’s emergence as a “soft power superpower.” Text: JAPAN AT WAR: AN ORAL HISTORY by Haruko Cook and Theodore F.
