Course Description: Computers and computer programs (software) are omnipresent in science and engineering, and perhaps the world around us at large. This course is an introductory course on computer programming. Programming is a creative activity and the course stresses hands-on computer programming. The course has two major goals. One aim is to familiarize students with basic computer programming concepts such as Variables, Strings, Arrays, Operators, Conditional Statements, Loops, and Functions, for example. The second objective applies these basic programming concepts to computer-based problem-solving methods. The course envisages problems from numerical analysis and computer science (e.g., solving equations, or sorting and searching). Assessment: Midterm Exam (40%), Final Exam (40%), Assignments (20%).
