Course Description: This course provides an understanding of several fundamental aspects of modern Japanese culture. The course emphasizes communication issues related to language and society through the reading of relevant modern Japanese novels and stories. Also, several important cultural communication issues are selected in class so that students can discuss and develop relevant themes for their papers and presentations. Such topics include high and low context cultures, Collectivism, anxiety-avoidance culture, Ishin-Denshin (a Japanese concept of communication through unspoken implications), and Kotodama (the Japanese belief that mystical powers dwell in words and names). Texts: THE WILD GEESE by Ogai Mori; THE WOMAN IN THE DUNES by Kobo Abe; A PALE VIEW OF HILLS by Kazuo Ishiguro. Assessment: exams (35%), paper (35%), and participation (30%).
