Course Description: This course provides a study of the key differences between sex and gender with particular emphasis on gender differences in the use of health care, health perceptions, and the reporting of symptoms and illnesses. It examines how sex, society, chromosomes, and environment interact to determine who is well or ill, and also how some behavioral change theories can be used to explain these differences. It also looks at how, and whose behavior is risk-prone or risk averse and whose health needs are acknowledged or dismissed. Topics include social roles and responsibilities of men and women, health beliefs and behaviors, utilization of health services, mortality, morbidity, reproductive health, men’s health, and HIV/AIDS. Assessment: class discussions, quizzes, class participation, group work.
