Course Description:
This course examines the fundamental principles of molecular biology. As a foundation course for higher level Cell and Molecular Biology study, it covers the molecular basis of cell life and genetic manipulations that alter cellular processes or the form and function of organisms. Topics include the sequence of reactions that convert amino acids, CO2, and ribose sugar first to nucleoside monophosphates, and subsequently to their corresponding nucleoside triphosphates; the role of nucleotide metabolism in many diseases of humans; the classical experiments leading to the discovery of DNA structure; the structure of DNA/RNA to its function; the molecular basis of transmission of genetic information from one generation to another via replication; and how cells read the genetic information stored in the genome.
