Course Description: This course focuses on the short story exploring the craft by reading stories and essays (on the writing process) by some of the best writers working with the form. Readings and lectures are organized around various elements of story writing and are complemented with extensive class discussions, writing exercises, and workshops. The writing workshop--where students are asked to provide detailed and constructive feedback on peer work--is a particularly important component of the course. The practical aspects of publishing are covered in the final few weeks of the course, by the end of which students will have completed a portfolio comprising: at least two original works of fiction of around 2,000 words; a number of short pieces generated through writing exercises; written responses to weekly reading assignments (short stories, essays, etc.) and peer work; and other work assigned by the instructor. Assessment: original stories and drafts (30%), Writing assignments (30%), and attendance and participation (40%).
