Course Description: An historical survey of the rise of Tokyo from a small village through its emergence as the world’s largest city. This course explores how Tokyo became a political, social, cultural, and economic center through three distinct historical phases: shogunal, imperial, and global. Readings and assignments explore all levels of Japanese society while examining the social, geographic, and international conditions that made and continue to make and remake the city. Assessment: final exam, reports, and attendance and participation.
