Course Description: This course introduces important concepts and issues in sociolinguistics, which concerns the study of the interaction between language and society. Topics: diversity of language on a global scale; the purposes to which language may be put in various social settings; the degree to which language contributes to the formation of identity (geographical, national, social, etc.); how language choice operates in multilingual communities; how language ideology can lead to political conflict; and how governments in various countries select and implement language policies. Assessment: Exam (20%), papers (20%), class participation (20%), attendance (40%).
