Course Description: The focus of this course is on Colonial Wars and the Specters of Empire, 1937-1975: Okinawa, Korea and Vietnam. The course offers theoretical, historical, and contemporary debates on colonialism and post-colonialism. It provides polemical outlines of theoretical terms such as racism, nationalism, Orientalism, and third-world feminism. Other topics include visible and invisible tortures after 9/11, the impact of global neoliberal politics, the memory and testimony in Palestine and Israel conflict since the Holocaust, the War in Okinawa, and the historical revisionism in Japan. Text: THE KOREAN WAR: A HISTORY by Bruce Cumings (2011); and other materials provided. Assessment: final paper (2,000 words, 50%), presentation (20%), and response papers and participation (30%).
