Course Description: This course examines the development and transformations of modern Japanese political thought, from the end of the Meiji period (1911) to the present. Major concerns of this course are: the characteristics of Japanese Fascist regime; Japan's revolt against the West; and war memory and war responsibility in contemporary Japan. This is basically intended to be a lecture course, but colloquium style sessions are also organized several times. A basic knowledge of modern Japanese history in advance is recommended, but not mandatory. Assessment: two papers (70%), and attendance and participation (30%).
