Course Description: This course introduces politics and policies in contemporary Japan. Like many other developed countries in the world, Japan currently faces myriads of critical issues as the society matures and undergoes a variety of changes. In the first half of the course, we will various contemporary societal issues in Japan as well as relevant policies are examined in order to understand how and to what extent these issues have been addressed in the country. The second half of the course serves as an introduction to Japanese politics. Assessment: final exam (50%), group presentation (30%) and assignments (20%).
