Course Description: This is an exploratory culture course for foreign students to learn about and share insights into various aspects of the living culture of Japan with some emphasis placed on the effects of the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011 and the rebuilding effort thereof. Because the students come from all around the globe with widely varying cultural backgrounds, it is expected that they learn not only about the Japanese culture but about the sense of value of the other students as well. The course comprises three basic approaches: discussion of cultural aspects of the country; reading literature related to the 2011 earthquake and tsunami; and field trips to places of cultural significance. These components are designed to complement each other. Assessment: class participation, weekly web forum assignments, final paper, and presentation.
