Course Description: This is an exploratory culture course for foreign students to learn about and share insights into various aspects of the living culture of Japan with some emphasis placed on the Tohoku locale. The course comprises three basis approaches: discussion of certain cultural aspects of the country, reading modern Japanese literature, field trips to places of cultural significance. Reading: THE BEARS OF NAMETOKO by Kenji Miyazawa, THE FLOWER-EATING CRONE by Fumiko Enchi. Assessment: participation, weekly web forum assignments, the final paper and presentation.
