Course Description:
This course examines present wars and violent conflicts from a gender-sensible and (queer) feminist perspective. It also discusses the role of sexuality in the manifestation of hegemonic power relations. While the bulk of political conflict analysis does not take into account gender relations, gender-sensitive approaches emphasize the inter-dependencies between violence and gender. The course deals with theoretical, gender, feminist and feminine approaches in peace and conflict research, and asks questions about the gender-specific effects of violent conflicts. Also considered are symbolic and discursive representations of gender. Students analyze the construction of enemy images that arise through the gendering of the “other” and ask for the instrumentation of gender to legitimize violence.
