Course Description: This course introduces the study of communication and media focusing on some of the major issues and topics pertinent to current media conditions. The main focus is placed on globalization, critical theory (particularly so-called poststructuralism), and the concept of communication. The course examines widely used theoretical concepts in a critical study of media and communication, why these concepts are important, and how to use those concepts in thinking about various media and communication related issues. Texts: POSTSTRUCTURALISM: A VERY SHORT INTRODUCTION by Catherine Belsey; SPEAKING INTO THE AIR: A HISTORY OF THE IDEA OF COMMUNICATION by John Durham Peters; GLOBALIZATION: A VERY SHORT INTRODUCTION by Manfred B. Steger. Assessment: exams (80%) and presentations (20%).
